Principle-based training, experience to back it up.

Standing Offhand is about one thing: providing information and options to policemen to help increase their survivability and value.  Tyler and I have spent our entire adult lives in the defense of others and the protection of those alongside us.  We both began our careers in the military which then transitioned to law enforcement.  You’ll find more on the “Team” page but suffice to say we’ve done a lot: from the mundane to some of the most extreme circumstances imaginable, we’ve had a hand in both success and failure.  We’ve learned what works, what’s superfluous, and what’s plainly not good.  We’ve spent time in combat, both overseas and domestically, and applied our skills in environments ranging from traffic stops and party calls to direct action combat missions and VIP exfiltration.  All of this is certainly not to say though, that we know it all or have seen everything.  We’re constant students of the craft and will listen to damned near everyone (at least for a minute or 2).  We believe there is value in every period of instruction, even if all it does is confirm that something might not be in our wheelhouse.   HUMILITY is a big word for us and we strive to remain open-minded, even-tempered, and will never tell you that our way is the only route.

On the topic of big words, CONTEXT and RELEVANCE are equally hugeEverything we teach will be done within a greater framework, with practical application being a key component of overall success.  We focus our efforts on domestic US law enforcement because that’s where the breadth of our experience lies.  There is huge value in what’s been learned overseas and as veterans ourselves, have the utmost respect and admiration of those that have done what they did in far off lands.  However, we comprehensively understand that there is no 1:1 transfer of skill, technique, and tactics from one theatre to another.  To think so would be arrogant and egotistical and God knows there are enough of those types trying to take your money.  We are experts in recognizing the value of successes overseas, tweaking them to fit our AO, and applying them within the context of our world.  We speak the language, live the lifestyle, and understand the culture.  Our teaching style reflects exactly that.  Our course catalog recognizes what needs to be addressed and our “Offhand” attitude creates a better learning environment.  You’ll hear and see passion in what we do because ultimately what we’re doing, is saving us and ours as much as you and yours.

This is Standing Offhand.
